Yong Jian & Pei Wen

We would highly recommend taking lessons with Skye! He makes us really comfortable during the process of learning lessons within such a short period of time frame. He also made sure we were mentally prepared and confident to overcome our stage fright.

Our quick Q&A with Yong Jian & Pei Wen

1. What made the both of you decide to embark on the journey?
Early in our courtship days, we always wanted to do a wedding dance because we kind of “found” each other in that setting. Yong Jian (YJ) was the photographer for our university’s annual Joint Dance Concert although the first time round he mistook Pei Wen’s (PW) friend for her and snapped a lot of photos of her. We also always wanted to keep the dance a secret from all our guests, just in case we did not manage to execute it.

2. How was the entire preparation and journey like for the both of you?
Rushed and intensive because we were a little crazy. Since dancing was always on our plan, we started early because YJ has no dancing experience. We took our first lesson a year before our wedding day but shortly after, we became caught up with work, travels etc and that slid under the carpet. Pei Wen (PW) decided not to do it anymore because time was not on our side and towards the wedding day, there were some family hiccups.

Nevertheless, YJ decided to bite the bullet and insisted to do a wedding dance because he thinks we will regret it if we do not do it albeit knowing it will be an arduous process because he is completely unable to coordinate his limb movements, what more with music and a partner. With the limited time frame of 30 days to the wedding day, we needed a coach who was willing to take on this challenge with us.

We had a total of 3 or 4 lessons and many hours of practice (a.k.a. impatient guiding from PW) in between those lessons just to put the choreography together in a presentable manner. Everything was in a rush, from shortlisting the song, dance outfit to slotting in our surprise dance segment at our dinner banquet.

3. What was your experience on the wedding day itself? What do your friends and family think about it?
We thought we were prepared because no one would knew if we made a mistake right? Our mantra was to wing it and pretend we did not make any mistake if we do. When our guests entered the ballroom, they spotted the dance floor and started questioning us which makes us nervous! Some saw it coming but most were caught by surprise.

Overall everyone was full of compliments of our choreography and mostly amazed by the limited time we spent on getting it right.

4. Looking back and watching the videos of the both of you on the special day itself, what are your thoughts?
While it wasn’t technically perfect, we had fun and just like the title of our song, it was Perfect.

5. What was the experience with the instructor?
We would highly recommend taking lessons with Skye! He makes us really comfortable during the process of learning lessons within such a short period of time frame. He also made sure we were mentally prepared and confident to overcome our stage fright. If Skye is able to teach someone with no background, he can do much better with more than 30 days (with you).

Note: The couple’s success within three classes was very much also credited to Pei Wen’s background in dance and both their efforts and practice!
